It's when the leaves fall off the trees in the New York and elseware.<br />
As I was out on the Wilderness Way trail at Lime Hollow Nature Preserve today, it was starting. A little used trail it is not particularly well delineated anyway, but today it was even more difficult to follow. The Fall leaves had tended to "blur" the trail. And four times I had to stop and seriously look for markers before I continued, being sure I had the right trail. And, those leaves are going to keep falling, blurring many of our trails throughout NY.<br />
Not to worry; just be prepared. Carry a compass with a plan to get out by dark. A topo map can help so you can identify landmarks and terrain to know where you are and how to get home. And a GPS reading, taken before you leave the parking area, can be a great addition to your successful outing. Just be sure you have good batteries. :-)<br />
It's a GREAT time of year to be out in the wild. few bugs, great foliage and crisp air. Enjoy it all and be prepared, just in case you lose that trail that is covered by those fallen leaves.<br />

When outdoor writer Roger Fulton moved to Central New York
in 2012, he promised to write a series of hiking, biking and kayaking books for
the Finger Lakes Regions. And he has done exactly what he said he would do with
the release of his second “short hikes” book, and it covers our own “home” area
from Auburn to Syracuse. In it he leads you to 25 of the best trails in the
region to explore at your leisure in both Cayuga and Onondaga Counties.</div>

“We write outdoor books for ordinary people, he explained in

the Skaneatlas and Auburn areas around Cayuga Lake. There you will find great
waterfalls and interesting nature trails to explore.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
As always we give you explicit directions from an
Interstate highway to the trails and tell you what to expect when you get
there. Our books are always user friendly so you and your family can feel at

others, but all are fun. We enjoyed hiking each and every one of these trails.
Now you can, too.<o:p></o:p></div>

Saturday, May 30th 2015 author and naturalist Roger Fulton will
offer a free 3 hour course titled <b>Safe
in the Woods</b> at Lime Hollow Nature Center in Cortland, NY from 2 to 5 pm.
The course will be based on his best-selling book, <b><i>Safe in the Woods</i></b> – <b><i>Tips,
Techniques and Advice for Safety and Survival.</i></b> This free course is
appropriate for adults 16 and above. In a series of 3 Powerpoint presentations,
students will learn how to plan for an outing, how to dress, and what equipment
to carry. It will also include advice on what to do if you encounter “critters”
out there, from insects to bears. Although the planning and preparation for
your outing should keep you out of trouble, there will also be tips on what to
do when things go wrong from injuries to what to do if you lose the trail. The
last ½ hour we will take a short walk on the Lime Hollow trails to practice
what we have learned.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Although the seminar is free, you must make a reservation by
contacting Roger Fulton via email at: <a href="mailto:Roger@RogerFulton.com">Roger@RogerFulton.com</a>
or by calling him, afternoons or evenings at: 386-956-6089, because space is
very limited for this seminar. </div>

If you cannot attend this seminar, you can still get a copy
of his book, online or at Lime Hollow Nature Center’s gift store, or take the
Interactive course offered at <a href="http://www.rogerfulton.com/">www.RogerFulton.com</a>

<o:p> </o:p>The City of Syracuse is right in the middle of New York
State and is on the Northeast corner of the beautiful Finger Lakes Region. It
is surrounded by wonderful rural areas that provide great hiking trails and
wonderful views. In this trail guidebook we help you to explore 25 of the great
natural areas in both Onondaga and Cayuga Counties. From miles of paved trails
around Onondaga Lake to a moderate trek up to a hang gliding takeoff area with
a great view, we cover it all. Then we explore even more interesting trails to
the West of Syracuse to the Skaneatlas and Auburn areas around Cayuga Lake.
There you will find great waterfalls and interesting nature trails to explore.</div>

<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
As always we give you explicit directions from an
Interstate highway to the trails and tell you what to expect when you get
there. Our books are always user friendly so you and your family can feel at
ease doing these interesting trails. Some are a little more adventurous than
others, but all are fun. We enjoyed hiking each and every one of these trails.
Now you can, too.<o:p></o:p></div>

Fearing Lyme Disease I consulted a doctor. Since I was in Florida, I learned from the doctor that my chance of contracting Lyme Disease in Central Florida was small. So I will be fine after a few pills. But I wanted to share with all of my readers this Center for Disease Control map so you can see what geographical areas are most vulnerable. The map shows cases of Lyme Disease around the country in 2013.<br />

Clearly the Northeast is at highest risk. Makes sense since Lyme Disease is supposedly named for Lyme, Connecticut.<br />
So just be careful and seek medical attention for any seriously embedded tick. Go to an "urgent care" facility and let them remove it so they can identify it and best evaluate whether or not you need to be treated for Lyme Disease. Don't let it go. From all accounts, it's a debilitating illness once established.<br />

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: red;">New for 2015!<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Based on our best-selling book, <b><i>Safe in the Woods</i></b> – <b><i>Tips,
Techniques and Advice for Safety and Survival</i></b>, this interactive course
is appropriate for adults 16 and above. There is no time limit so students can
work on it at their leisure. In 20 simple and easy-to-follow lesson plans students
will learn how to plan for an outing, how to dress and what equipment to carry
and what to do if they encounter “critters” out there in the woods. Although
the planning and preparation for your outing should keep you out of trouble,
there are tips on what to do when things go wrong from injuries, to what to do
if you lose the trail. Upon signing up for the course you will receive a copy
of the book, <b><i>Safe in the Woods</i></b> (a $20 value itself), a lesson plan log and
directions on how to complete the course. All of that will be in hard copy as
well as on a CD with three hours of Powerpoint review topics and information.
Along the way I will personally be available to answer any questions you may
have about any aspect of the course by email or phone. If you choose to take
the Final Exam (optional) you can earn a Certificate of Completion which will
be issued and sent to you by mail. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The total cost
for this interactive course is $50.00 per student. It includes all materials

This past weekend we attended the New York State Outdoor Writers' "spring safari". It is where outdoor writers get to share stories and adventures. This year it was hosted by Fulton County Tourism. The base venue was the beautiful Peck's Lake near Gloversville, NY. The Peck family and their staff were absolutely wonderful. They made their rustic cabins seem like the Ritz Hotel. A special thanks goes out to them. Check out their website at: <a href="http://www.peckslake.com./">www.PecksLake.com.</a> This was the view from our cabin; aptly named 'Mountainview."<br />
