Red Eft or Red Spotted Newt

This very interesting critter was photographed, underwater, by Kathy Bozony at what is believed to be Upper Reservoir near Corinth, New York. A sub-species of the Eastern Newt, it is about 2 1/2 inches long and forages in shallow water. They prey voraciously on worms, insects, small crustaceons and larvae. They secrete toxic substances, and are therefore left alone by fish while in the water feeding. Double click on the pic to get a great view of this elusive critter.

Little known pond

Today we found a little known pond in the Corinth, NY area. We can't even find a map that shows its name. It is only about .25 miles into an old dam, but we actually walked all the way around the 5 acre pond and back down the opposite side of the creek. It is known as the Corinth Cooperator Area and is located off County Route 10 in Saratoga County. It is surrounded by pines and is just a great area. Thought we would share it with you in case you wanted a place to escape to this, or any other weekend. It'll appear in one of our future books, just not sure which one.
