Santa Escaping!

While he was supposed to be hard at work in his shop at the North Pole, we caught him escaping from a golf course at Little Ocmulgee State Park in Georgia on December 20th. Our paths just happened to cross, and we had a camera to catch him in the act of escaping.
We don't begrudge him a round of golf as a respite prior to his trek around the world, but just thought you should know.
Merry Christmas!

Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, NY

For years we have relied on Cornell's Ornithology website whenever we had a question about birds. I always figured it was a couple of professors and a bunch of students who ran it. WRONG!!This past weekend I finally got a chance to visit the Cornell Lab of Ornithology near Ithaca, NY at Sapsucker Woods. It's a 90,000 square foot building with more than 300 employees according to our wonderful guide Holly. If you haven't been there, you need to go. Great artwork, videos, a great bookstore and 4 miles of well-groomed trails. Oh yea, and a great bird garden with feeders and viewing areas and free scopes to view them. It's a WOW! if you have any interest in the birding world. Thanks for checking in, www.RogerFulton.com

Rock cairns as trail markers

This photo looks like a simple pile of rocks to the average person. But to others it is a "confidence builder," assuring them that they are on the trail! We're working on a book titled Safe in the Woods to help you learn these little tidbits to help you enjoy the great outdoors even more and, most importantly, safely. By the way, "cairn" is pronounced "Kern." More on them in the book.
P.S. We encountered many of them as we climbed Spruce Mountain for our recent firetower book.
