I know it's cold and snowy in NY and hope you are getting to snowshoe and ski. This is a photo of some newborn raccoons we found the other day in Florida at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Florida. Honest, spring will come to you soon and you can get this same view in your backyard. As always,

Gun Control in NY

I did my Master's Essay on the effectiveness of the gun control laws in New York while at the Rockefeller College of Public Afairs and Policy, a SUNY graduate school. In my research I found this little gem from 100 years ago from the New York Times editorial staff. It could have been written yesterday!

"The concealed weapons law has not worked as well as was expected by those of us who commended it. This is a fact too obvious for denial. Criminals are as well armed as ever......
There is the impression of honest men, that they were wrongly deprived of the means of defending themselves and their property."
New York Times Editorial
May 24, 1913

This was the most serious beginning of gun control in the United States. A series of gun control laws, collectively called, The Sullivan Laws, attempted to regulate the carrying of handguns in the state of New York. When passed in 1911, it was highly touted as the new solution for the rising crime rate in New York City. The politicians of the time claimed that the new law would, "Get criminals off the streets of New York."
Sooo, 100 years later, How's that working out for you Mayor Bloomberg?
